OH my were we greatly surprised and overjoyed upon arriving in our classroom on Wednesday, after Library.... We found a present with a card --- from SANTA!  We received our very own, Elf-on-a-Shelf!  We named him, Mr. Nick!  Earlier in the week, Holly Bear, arrived. There was some question as to the authenticity of Holly Bear.... It was all confirmed with Santa's note that Holly Bear sometimes helps out the Elves.... But Santa sent us Mr.Nick to make sure there was someone watching over this AMAZING group of second graders!   Check out the photo page... I'll soon be uploading some photos for all to enjoy.

I'm putting a shout - out to Santa.... THANK YOU!  Santa sure knows how to put joy in the hearts of young and old!

God Be With You.... always...

Good morning,

We are so lucky! Mr. Krebs secured a grant for us to purchase an aquarium. We received the aquarium shortly before Thanksgiving. How grateful we are!

It's in a box... we have to set it up. I'm asking if anyone has experience setting up an aquarium - I don't :(   Please contact me, by email, if you have experience and would be willing to help me start up our class aquarium.

Thank you!

I hope that you all had a blessed and joyful Thanksgiving with your families.

This week we will have a religion test on Chapter 8 on Friday.

Remember that the November Virtue project is due, tomorrow, December 1st.

Also.... Friday is a half day for the students!

God be with you.

November.... I can hardly believe I am writing that already....:(

The children are coming home today with their religion books again.... MY APOLOGIES... I left their test at home.....I will administer it tomorrow.

We had an amazing day today! Nothing special, just wonderful, cooperative working throughout the day.

I will post the conference schedule on the web page later this week. Please make sure you check it out... unfortunately, there is no "wiggle room" in the schedule. We are given only a limited time, please help keep me on schedule so no has to wait or get home at an unreasonable hour!

Glorious sunshine.... let's enjoy these warm days while we can....

Good Afternoon!

First, thank you!  I received both the stirrers and the elastic bands. Thank you so much for your generosity!  I am truly blessed to have you all as class parents.

Secondly, I wanted to reiterate that there are two meetings this week regarding First Reconciliation. You, as second grade parents must attend one of these meetings. It does not matter which one. Sister Kathleen did mention it in her weekly newsletter and, I believe, it is on the calendar.

Since we have stretched this spelling unit out to two weeks, the children and I discussed taking the spelling test on Thursday this week as opposed to Friday.

There is great beauty surrounding us in Autumn... we should take some time to be mindful of God's glory around us before the cold, stark days of winter grip us with cold and snow!

Good evening!

What a splendid day we had in 2nd grade today! The weather was simply wonderful as we participated in the school Walk-a-thon this morning. I feel blessed to be the teacher of such thoughtful, kind children. We really bonded as a class unit and took time to be mindful of the beauty of the day as well as the simple joy of walking and getting all our stamps!  It was very nice to see so many parents support our school and our class.  We are truly blessed. The Walk-a-thon culminated with crunchy, yummy apples and then an unexpected sweet treat of munchkins - Thank you, Mrs. Zingaro!

I've been trying to plan ahead a bit... in order to enhance a lesson in math I could use 1000 + red and white plastic coffee stirrers and 100 + rubber bands. The children will have fun "bundling" and will surely be grateful for your generosity. I know that sometimes we have the strangest things in our basements... I just cleaned out my basement this summer - I got rid of some long unused items!  So if you have any of the needed items, I, too, would greatly appreciate it.

Enjoy the crisp autumn air and the beauty of the remaining colorful leaves.  All too soon this glorious season will be past us.

GBWY, always.

Good evening!

I wanted to remind everyone that the Walk-A-Thon is this Friday. We will walk as a class and you are all welcome to walk with us. The 2nd grade will begin walking at 9:30 a.m.  I'm hopeful that the weather will be cooperative and we will have a beautiful autumn day to stroll the grounds of St. Denis-St. Columba School.

Additionally, I wanted to let you know that you can subscribe to this blog... on the right side it gives you an option to subscribe to the feed.  I tested it out with another email address and it works! When I update this page you will get an email alert. How great is that! Unfortunately, there is no alert when I update other pages on the web. This is my communication page where I try to keep you updated with important information. I want to make it clear that this should not be used to rely on homework updates. A great feature of this blog type post is that all previous entries remain and are catalogued by date. That is why I will always title the post the date of the entry. This should keep us organized.

I also wanted to take a moment to thank Mrs. DeSousa and Mrs. Menuau who have volunteered to be our room moms this year. We had a meeting and I anticipate a wonderful year filled with many good things.

Good afternoon, Parents!

As you know, we are having the Interim Assessments this week. Today we had the ELA portion and all went very well. Tomorrow we will take the Math portion; I anticipate it to go just as smoothly. Since the assessments cut into our routine a bit I've decided not to have a spelling test this week. We will spread this unit out to two weeks and have the spelling test, that was scheduled for this week, next Friday on October 30th. This is a welcome "break" as it gives us time to work on special projects in class. The children are very excited to be working on two special projects.

Please continue to work on the Reading Response Logs at home. Each Friday the children should bring in a completed log to class. There is no excuse for late papers, unless the child is absent.

A head's up... The October Virtue Project, that I hope you have been working on all month, is due in class on Monday November 2nd - please do not send in your project earlier. This is helpful to my organizational structure. Thank you for cooperating.

Thank you for being so good about signing and returning test papers!  I will send home the Frog and Toad Together test after an absent student makes it up. I am counting it as a quiz this time, since it is the first of these types of tests. I did go over it with the children. As you will see, there are places where they must write a sentence to answer a very specific question. I do read each question to the children and explain, as necessary, what I'm asking for each question. I will continue to do this for the first half of year. I am trying to teach them test taking strategies as we go along. This will help them in years ahead, hopefully!

I am noticing more spelling errors on the spelling tests. We discussed this in class. If these errors continue, I will require the spelling homework pages from some students. This should help improve their spelling performance.

We have completed Chapter 3 in Religion. The test will be on Thursday. I will send home the religion book and notebook again this evening and, of course, tomorrow. Continue to practice the Our Father prayer. This time they will have to recite it to me. Have them practice saying it aloud at home - making sure to enunciate and pronounce the words correctly.  We are stressing this skill in class. Thank you, again!

God be with you!
