Dare I say... spring!

I hope that you are enjoying the new life that is beginning to blossom all around us!

I have a few reminders for you:
  • The children will receive Reconciliation next week; I'll let you know the exact day when I know.  We will have to help them remember how to prepare for the sacrament.
  • Please have your child in the Church on Thursday May 3rd at 4:30 for practice.  The practice runs about an hour or so.  You may wait in the rear of the Church, if you choose.
  • Please sign all homework from this point forward.  I want to make sure that you see the work being handed in.  I am trying to eliminate poor work habits.  I will send back any work that needs more effort put into it.
  • Communion is on May 5th!  Please have your child in the gym by 8:45 a.m.
  • Our field trip is on May 23rd - I've almost received all of the permission slips.  I had an abundance of interested parents willing to go on our trip with us -- How Wonderful!  Unfortunately, I cannot take everyone.  I told the children that I will pull two names; the other two spots are designated for our room moms.  Thank you again, for ALWAYS supporting me and the class.  I really do APPRECIATE you.
  • The spring concert is also on the horizon... May 17th!  I heard that the 2nd grade may just steal the show!
  • Shhhhhhh... let's keep it our secret!

I keep writing about spring.... it doesn't feel like it today!  What crazy weather we've had this year.... when it is 98 and humid, this summer I will long for these cool "spring" days!

We are A L M O S T at the big event we've all been waiting for........ First Holy Communion!  The children are so excited; such beautiful, pure innocence -- I love it! Father Michael will take us to the church this week for a tour.  He does such a wonderful job with the children; they absorb everything he tells them.

You will be happy to know that Mr. Krebs helped me (Actually, he did it for me... Thanks, Mr. Krebs! ) arrange a field trip.  Details will be coming home soon.

Stay warm, enjoy your family and get set for the final quarter of 2nd grade!

Spring?  I think it took a wrong turn!

I hope you are all safe and warm.  It is actually quite nice out today; if you can overlook all the white fluff!

Hopefully, this is the last of the interruptions to our schedule.  It is daunting to reschedule and prioritize all of our work.  I apologize for any burden or frustration this has placed on you, at home, with studying, homework, etc.  It has taken it's toll on planning as well!

You may have noticed, I've been weening the children toward being more independent... for the most part they are "rising to the occasion!"

Starting next week, there will only be the 12 memory words on each spelling test; you will notice that they become more challenging.

I hope that you either went to one of the Parent Communion Meetings, called the Religious Education Office or got the information from their website.  Click here for a link.   We are group B - Don't look for my name... you will find it under St. Denis-St. Columba Regional Catholic School!

Hello!

It is a rainy Sunday morning! This tells me that spring is around the corner!

The children are quite excited to be so close the their First Holy Communion!

There is a First Communion Meeting that you (parents) must attend.  The meeting is held on two occasions.  You need only go to one of them.  Here are the two dates and times.  I know that many of you have questions about the details of the day: all of your questions will be answered during this meeting.

Wednesday February 28 7:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Saturday March 3 9:15 - 10:15 a.m.

Stay dry today!

When I first started with Drama Club I asked the students to label their club, thereby having something they can invest in. We name clubs so we can stand behind them, get involved and have something conceptual as well as tangible to belong to.  After brainstorming in groups and then several rounds of blind voting - the students chose their name for this year: “Rulers Of The Scenes!”  So the producers of Dear, Edwina will be the Rulers Of The Scenes.  We also discussed leadership which is necessary to the health of any organization. More importantly, developing leadership skills will aid the student in any field as they go forward.  The students nominated themselves and then we blind voted again. Here are the results: President - Liam Nestler Vice President - Emma Drumm Secretary - Abby DeFrancesco Treasurer - Jamieson Druckenmiller Publicity - Lily Graves and Olivia D’Alessandro We did put together a “shadow” system where 7th graders were to learn so they could take over leadership next year, however; many of those were not prepared to actually participate fully so this is something we will be working on.  Congratulations to the leaders this year!

Crazy day for sure.... the children just left and I neglected to give them the Act of Contrition worksheet.... so I've posted it on my Religion link.... I was only giving them the 2nd page... so if you read this and they can get it done for practice, great!

Good Afternoon: I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself since I swooped in mid-year to Drama Club.  I am and have been a singer/dancer/actress since I can remember being me. I am trained in jazz, tap, Russian ballet and pointe’. I was a gymnast, model and cheerleader at times as well. Loving musical theater as I did, I pursued that primarily in regional theater and earned my equity candidacy. As a big believer in knowing your craft inside and out, I learned production and backstage skills as well. I found out that I love directing almost as I love the spotlight. I have directed at Madison Square Garden and worked operations and stage management at Viacom, VH-1 and MTV.  When I found myself settling down, I opened my own production company in May 1993 called 4th Wall Productions and began producing and directing shows in the tri-state area. When my daughter was young, I wanted to spend my summers with her, so I developed a Summer Theater Camp in 2000. My daughter found her people and I found my purpose. We offer dance, drama, musical theater, Glee, improv and teen weeks. It is among my greatest accomplishments after my children.  My daughter, Alexandra Vittorini, went to OLL and graduated from Fordham and is also a singer/dancer/actress. She may join me from time-to-time teaching at SDSC but right now she lives in NYC and performs at Don’t Tell Mama, a cabaret in midtown. She is in the Broadway Brunch on Sundays and is amazing! She also sings with Bosco and The Storm a local R&B band. The boys, Harrison and Logan attended SDSC but did not take to theater as much as Alexandra did, although they are both talented musicians. Logan is now a Sophomore at Marist and Harrison owns Harry’s Hot Sandwiches in Beacon. Can you tell I am proud?  I am shooting season 3 of “Billions” for Showtime currently and have been there since September. I am an office worker for Axe Capital. I may end up on the cutting room floor, but I wanted to learn more about television production, so I am there until my contract ends in March.  I look forward to working with the students. To witness a young person take a leap of faith on themselves and find their wings is among God’s greatest gifts and I am honored to be part of that.  I will be chatting with you again shortly and regale you all with the stories of how wonderful your children are.  Best -  Christine Manning

Good Day!
What a crazy few weeks... the flu, snow delays, snow cancellations!  All as we prepare for a big event... First Penance!
Those of you receiving First Penance on Saturday, we need to be in the St. Columba Church by 9:15 a.m.  Please dress in neat, Sunday clothing. The whole ceremony should be over by 10:30. Remind your child to examine his/her conscience before coming to church; this way they are prepared to confess their sins.  We have been practicing in class... I know they are nervous...weren't you the first time?  They will be fine; I've assured them!
The children are ready!  We will have our chapter 11 and 12 test tomorrow... Friday.  I've posted a study sheet on my web page -- on the Religion tab...
The children will bring home a worksheet for the Act of Contrition; that is to be filled out for homework.  I will be asking each child to recite the prayer tomorrow; it will count for 10 points on the test. Remind them, as I always do, that part of the prayer is beginning and ending with the Sign of the Cross. Reverence is always part of prayer.
Our spelling test will be on Monday - I'm sorry for the weekend studying... I can't cram everything into one day... thanks for understanding.

We are working hard to catch up... in all areas... it is test to see how we live the virtue of patience!

Good evening, I hope that you are all well and enjoying this slight reprieve from the bitter cold.

I wanted to make sure you are all checking Sister Kathleen's email Newsletter... there are lots of things to be on top of this week.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, the book fair is in full swing.  I'm sure I'll see many of you either before school at the Books, Buddies and Bagels or during our Book Buying Time.... 9:00 a.m.  If you are sending money/check, please just make sure that it is in an envelope or similar.  This will ensure that if there is change, it will be kept safe until it gets home.

I'm excited to participate in the Gathering of Bookworms... where the whole school will sit and read; it is a fun event!

Wednesday is a special NUT Award day where students are invited to wear BRIGHT SPRING AND SUMMER COLORS!  Our cheery day will culminate with an ice cream social.

It would be so nice to see you at mass on Friday morning.  The children get so excited when you can attend.

I also want to remind you to practice for Reconciliation at home with the paper I sent... Most of the children will receive First Penance on Saturday, February 10th.  I look forward to seeing you there.

If your child is receiving the sacrament at your parish, please provide me with the date and name of the church.  I need to update their official record card in school.

Also... Friday is a HALF DAY.... DON'T SEND LUNCH UNLESS YOUR CHILD IS ATTENDING AFTER SCHOOL

... I think that's it....
