Good morning! Spring is almost here......

I thought I'd give you a quick update.... we are coming to the end of our EARTH'S SURFACE unit in Science. The vocabulary quiz that we have been preparing for is tomorrow... Friday. We will finish up our last lab and then answer post lab questions. Our unit test will be next week on Wednesday. I will send the science books home over the weekend for you to get a jump on reviewing.

As you noticed, our Religion chapters bring us to studying The Mass. This is most important for us as we are preparing to receive First Holy Communion VERY SOON!  Please, help your child learn the responses for mass.  There is no better way than to attend weekly mass.  Yes, we do practice in class!  We will attend First Friday mass tomorrow with our school community. I hope to see many of you there to celebrate with us.

Please keep up to date with the Superkids at home spelling work. Words are getting more challenging and practice is imperative.

I must run, or I'll be late for school!

GBWY, always!

Good evening!

Where is spring? The ground hog promised it was coming early... I'm ready!

I've missed my little chickadee's who've been sick these past days. The classroom wasn't the same... hurry and get well!

We are starting Unit 5 Week 2 in Superkids... But, of course, it's been delayed with the long weekend, the snow day and 1/3 of the class absent so... I've decided that we will bump our spelling test to Tuesday February 23, 2016. I will adjust the schedule for week 3 - if needed - and let the children know - and you!

Please make sure that your child's supply box is "updated". I'm noticing that many of them do not have adequate pencils, erasers and glue sticks. I'm sure you've been informed that we are starting cursive/script writing. I stress posture as well as sharp pencils. I recommend starting each day with 5 sharpened pencils in the pencil box.

I want to thank Mrs. DeSousa for providing us with a fun and yummy 100 Day Snack!  We celebrated the 100th day of school with joy - coupled with a few frowns... you see we only have 76 days left as 2nd graders - and we are having an AMAZING year.

A request for help:  Since we are preparing for the sacrament of First Holy Eucharist we are studying the mass. It would be so helpful if the children went to mass and actively, practiced participating in the responses and prayers. We do practice in class, but we all know that real life practice is most beneficial. They will be so proud when they stand at their celebration and confidently make all the necessary responses.  Thank you! I can't wait to witness this very special day for all the children.

FORGIVE ME!

My really "with it" Mom's caught my error! Thank you! The spelling list the children came home with today was incorrect. I really can't tell you how it  happened! I somehow printed out an incorrect list and had the children put it in their planners. Although the words we are working on in class are the correct words. Yeah for that! I will have the correct list reprinted for tomorrow (Thursday) and all should be well!

Please make sure that you check the spelling pages I post on the website. You will note that we are now only being tested on memory words. We started a new section, the last section, of Superkids and things are changing up a bit.

We started cursive/script writing - everyone is thrilled! Please make sure the children practice at home. I don't allow erasing when practicing cursive. This allows the children to keep moving on - when they begin to erase it takes them a long time to finish. Also, they see progress.  This is ALWAYS a good thing. Please keep the same policy in place when practicing at home.

Bundle up, and get ready for a very cold weekend!  I think a good book and maybe a few movies while snuggling on the sofa are the perfect remedy for those blustery winds expected!

Happy SuperBowl Sunday! Since "my" team didn't make it, I haven't chosen a team to root for...Enjoy the game!

The First Reconciliation Ceremony yesterday was so nice. Thank you all for sharing this day and making it so special for everyone. I'm so proud of all the children; they were so reverent! How wonderful!

A little update: we are starting a new unit in Superkids this week. I uploaded the new Spelling, Backpack pages as well as Handwriting practices pages. The children will be learning cursive writing - and they will need extra practice at home each night. It would be helpful for the children to practice the same letter/letters at home, daily for good, legible handwriting. I will update the homework calendar with letters learned each day. This will enable you to have your child practice the correct letter at home each night. They can also practice in a notebook.

A reminder, the children have a half day of school on Friday, and there is no school next Monday for President's Day. Enjoy the time.

Good evening,

My apologies... I wrote a post over the weekend.... somehow it did not get posted... it is saved as a draft.. and it is "lost" in the system.

Tomorrow is "Theme Day". We have been blessed with Room Parents who created beautiful, fun theme shirts.  The children should wear patriotic attire - know that they will wear a t-shirt (they decorated it at school and will get it upon arrival in the gym tomorrow morning) that supports our theme "2nd Grade American Rock Stars" -

We have had a fun filled week celebrating our wonderful Catholic School!

Friday is our school mass. Please note, when we have mass the children are to wear full uniform.

Saturday is First Reconciliation!  I look forward to seeing you at the church at 9:15 a.m. What a special day!

Good evening!  Finally, snow!  I'm pleased that it is on the weekend!

A few reminders:
  1. Interim Assessments will take place this week on Monday and Wednesday.
  2. Religion test on chapters 11 and 12 will be on Thursday due to Interim Assessments.
  3. First Penance is on February 6, 2016. Students must be in the church by 9:15 a.m. Students will sit with me for the first part of the service. Parents are invited to also go to confession on this day. What a great way to model your faith for your child and to participate in the Jubilee Year of Mercy!
  4. There will not be a spelling test this Friday. The regular test for Unit 4 week 4 will be on Friday February 5, 2016.
  5. Please make sure you peruse Sister Kathleen's newsletter for up to date information regarding Catholic Schools Week, menus, book fair, etc.

Stay safe and warm.

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a relaxing, uplifting Christmas with your families. I know I did! What a blessing our children can be!

It was wonderful to see all their smiling faces yesterday morning! They make my every day!  :-)

We are back into the swing of things... in just a month the children will receive First Penance! We will begin to practice how to go to confession. We do say the Act of Contrition, daily, in school. Please also practice at home. We say the "modern" version. You may have to re-learn it with your child.  When I first started to learn the "new" prayer with my students, I went to confession and recited part of the old version and part of the new version... making it, "my version"!   Father Anthony certainly knew that I was truly sorry!

God be with you, as we embark upon 2016!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

aaaahhhh the quiet of the classroom when my cherubs are not here!  My fingers are ice cubes as I type this note - in about an hour your little one - my little ones - will arrive all dressed in their Christmas colors in anticipation of the wonderful Christmas concert.  I look forward to hearing them perform. Their little voices really are angelic.

I wanted to make sure I took a moment to wish you all a blessed Christmas with your family. I also want to thank you for your support and dedication to SDSC and me. It has been a truly wonderful year so far... I don't like to think that it will end.... so I won't "go there" yet!  We have much to anticipate and treasure as we embark upon 2016. I know that I am working on being mindful of each day and as many "moments" in each day as possible. Your children make me smile every day; thank you for molding them into the amazing children that they are.  They are my daily blessings!

God be with you, always.
