Welcome to Second Grade!

You can get ready for school by starting your "school time" bed time now... getting enough sleep each night helps you learn more!  We have lots to learn this year!

Sleep and School-aged Children (6-13 years)

Sleepy KidChildren aged six to 13 need 9-11 hours of sleep. At the same time, there is an increasing demand on their time from school (e.g., homework), sports and other extracurricular and social activities. In addition, school-aged children become more interested in TV, computers, the media and Internet as well as caffeine products – all of which can lead to difficulty falling asleep, nightmares and disruptions to their sleep. In particular, watching TV close to bedtime has been associated with bedtime resistance, difficulty falling asleep, anxiety around sleep and sleeping fewer hours.

Sleep problems and disorders are prevalent at this age. Poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems such as  ADHD and cognitive problems that impact on their ability to learn in school.

Sleep Tips for School-aged Children

  • Teach school-aged children about healthy sleep habits.
  • Continue to emphasize need for regular and consistent sleep schedule and bedtime routine.
  • Make child's bedroom conducive to sleep – dark, cool and quiet.
  • Keep TV and computers out of the bedroom.
  • Avoid caffeine.

Bring a healthy snack each day; we use spoons and forks for lunch time treats only. We also have nut allergies in the room... NO NUT FOODS ALLOWED AT SNACK TIME.
Here is a link with some fun, healthy ideas for snack time...the link talks about  bringing snack for the whole class.... we DON'T do that... I simply liked the snack ideas and thought some of you might like them too!  http://www.parents.com/recipes/cooking/kid-friendly-food/healthy-snacks/

Write your name on all your clothing; use permanent marker.

Bring in your book reports on Wednesday: I can't wait to hear you read them to me!

I'm SO excited to be your teacher~I know that we will have a great year together!

    God be with you...

Friday is our Remembrance Mass.

All 2nd graders should come to school in their communion outfits. The mass is at 10:00 a.m.  Some children have reading parts which they are to practice at home each evening.  We will have practice in school each day this week.

I look forward to seeing you all at the mass. The children are quite excited about it!

After the mass is a luncheon.  The children will change into their uniforms after the luncheon.  I am not permitted to change the children.  You are responsible for getting their communion clothing home safely. If you will not be here for the mass you must make arrangements to have your child changed and their communion clothing safely packaged up.

There is not a spelling test this week; the children should know the words as they will be part of their sentences next week.

Bravo to our First Communicants! I'm proud of the children and so happy that they have Jesus in them!  By now they should all have had their "second" Holy Communion... how wonderful!

Just a heads up... we are starting ITBS testing this week... therefore our schedule will be "off". Please check back to see the changes as they happen.  I appreciate your patience.... this is a hectic time of year!  We are also starting our concert practice...We will all practice the virtue of PATIENCE!

Update
Good evening,

First, we had a great trip... I'm sure you heard about it by now!  Thanks to Miss Marilyn at Locust Grove for providing us with a great hands on experience learning about simple machines and exploring some of the ways the folks used them at the farm long ago. Kudos to our Chaperone Moms... they did a great job!  Thank you; Thank you; Thank you!!!!!

Secondly, the children have First Holy Communion practice Thursday at 4:30 -- please drop them off in the church and pick them up at 5:30 in the church.

Additionally, the children will not be tested on the spelling words this week; please do hand in the backpack pages on Thursday. Next week we will begin a new set of words and have our regular test on Friday.

Lastly, Father Michael will be hearing confessions for the children tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

The class trip is tomorrow.  Please send your child to school in neat, appropriate clothing. Our program is indoors; we will possibly eat lunch outside on picnic tables.

Although I did send home the souvenir form with each child; some children informed me today that they never got it. I've attached a copy on my "Printables" link.  That is the only way the children will be permitted to purchase souvenirs.

Your child should bring his/her lunch to school in a disposable bag.

Today the students came home with a book and a Book Talk journal.  This is the book they will read for their April Book report - project.   They simply need to read the book and complete the Book Talk journal.  This is due on April 26th.

Changes to make note of:

1. The Reading Log has changed.  It will now be a monthly reading log.  The children will come home with a new one for March.  Your child simply needs to write the name and author of any books they've read during the month.  They should highlight three of the titles and be prepared to answer questions/write a response, that I choose,  in school about the book.  They need to hand in a log on the last school day of each month.  So, they have only three more to do this year!   March 31st.  April 28th.  May 31st.

2. There will no longer be script homework.  I'll leave the practice pages posted on my webpage and you may decide if you wish your child to have extra practice at home.  I will not collect any pages at school.
